Reminder #1 :

  • New unique RT9999 identifier

All account numbers under the simplified GST/HST system that were created before May 16, 2023 were automatically changed to include the new unique RT9999 identifier on June 30, 2023, which is deemed to have come into effect on July 1, 2023, making it easier to distinguish between registrants under the simplified GST/HST system and registrants under the regular GST/HST system.

  • Fiera Foods Company v. His Majesty

The decision dealt with a number of elements, but the Court set out some very important ones concerning the documentation required to claim ITCs. Indeed, the Court mentioned that it was necessary to obtain the information required by the Excise Tax Act (ETA) before ITCs could be claimed, but that the CRA had no right to specify the form of the documents or information obtained. It is only relevant that the information obtained and stored be reliable.

Furthermore, the fact that the agencies as suppliers failed to comply with requirements of the applicable legislation for the treatment of temporary workers as employees does not alter the fact that services were provided by these agencies to Fiera Foods Company, and that the latter paid for such services plus the applicable HST in accordance with section 165 ETA.
